The movie was written and directed by Marian Quinn, sister to actor Aidan Quinn. It won an IFTA for Cinematography and was selected for the prestigious Berlinale International Film Festival. Ms. Quinn went on to win the inaugural Tiernan McBride Screenwriting Award for the script, as well as the Galway Film Fleadh’s “Best First Feature Award” for directing the movie. Recently I had a chance to finally watch this captivating look at a teenage girl growing up in the late 70’s in Dublin, Ireland.

Of particular interest to this blog was the use of Rory Gallagher’s “I Fall Apart” in a crucial scene in the movie. The heroine of the story, Maeve, sneaks into a local dance with an older boy she is smitten with, only to be unceremoniously dumped by him for another, older girl at the dance. During this emotional scene, you can hear Rory’s song in the background, perfectly encapsulating the drama that is unfolding. The song was written during the time of Rory’s own bitter divorce from his former band mates in the legendary Rock group Taste. I have blogged about this song before. You can read that post here:‘Til I Fall Apart. Gerry McAvoy once called “I Fall Apart” a very tender love song. I disagree. I think there’s a lot of anger and hurt in this song and it fits perfectly with what is going on in the movie — the hurt Maeve feels, the sense of betrayal and loss.

The score for the film was composed by internationally renowned Irish guitarist, Gerry Leonard, aka “Spooky Ghost”. Putting popular music in a low budget independent film can be a daunting task, but Rory’s brother Donal was very helpful:

Another challenge we faced was having authentic music from the time…We were lucky with the Rory Gallagher track, I Fall Apart, his brother Donal was really supportive…– Marian Quinn

Below is the video clip from the movie that contains a bit of Rory’s song, “I Fall Apart”. I hope you enjoy it. And I hope you go out and buy or rent the movie. You’ll be glad you did.
